Delta Quilters

I had a wonderful time with the members of the Delta Quilters, of Brentwood, California. The members volunteered to model my garments and did me proud! I think I may have inspired at least 20 new Quilt Diva's, complete with positive Attitude and a strut that would make any runway show spectacular.

Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival - Part 1: The Quilt

The Quilt and the Controversy:

Let me start by saying I am writing this after being up and moving from 4am on Tuesday, 2/22 through 3:30am today with a few 5 hour naps thrown in between teaching, judging, presenting a lecture, viewing quilts and a little retail therapy. That said, here is my opinion of the events related to The Quilt:

The SAQA exhibit was powerful in ways that made me examine my social awareness. That is not a comfortable feeling, but art evokes feelings and some of them my not be the ones we want, but face them nonetheless.

The hoopla created a roar that went through that show like butter off hot grits. I was teaching and several students came back from lunch breathless and asking had I seen That Quilt? Me, what quilt and what’s happening? Stories ran the gamut from “…, there's a naked lady quilt downstairs and somebody got arrested for making a lot of noise…”, to “…show manage had to call the cops ‘cause some woman demanded that a quilt be removed from the show…” The truth was somewhere in between.

This SAQA exhibit did what is had challenged itself to do, raise social awareness to the indignities that countless people live with on a daily basis….it did that powerfully.

The fact that this quilt was singled out, brought added attention to the SAQA exhibit and brought hoards of folks to the quilt show. This alone was priceless. The vendors were doing the happy dance due to the increase in foot traffic.

I watched, during one of my mad dashes around the show, as one quilter would lead her group to see That Quilt and then they would continue to view the entire exhibit. You could not buy that kind of advertising for a show.

During lunch breaks there was continued discussion of the exhibit. How cool is that? People sitting around talking about social issues and their feelings, art quilts and artist was refreshing. It was amazing to see.

Again, this is from my perspective only and I am sleep deprived, but I needed to get my impressions down on paper (you know what I mean). I also think that it brought a new perspective to a lot of viewers that had never paid more than a glancing nod to Art Quilts and broadened a few horizons. I say “Bravo SAQA” and thanks for the controversy.

Now I have to go back to sleep before I fall over. Come back during the week as my brain starts to normalize again for more comments and photos from the Mid Atlantic quilt show. Ta Dahlings!

Houston Quilt Market 2010 Part 3 The Quilts

Houston Quilt Market 2010 Part 2 The Garments

All of you designers, wearable artist and fashionistas out there, get in your studios and create something wonderful for the next show. I would love to see this category double or triple by next year. If we don't submit our garments for shows, who will? I am saying this to myself also. Time to "work it'!

Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF)

Just one more week and it's off to PIQF for classes, lectures and the most fun ever Fashion Show. The show starts on October 14 and runs through Sunday, October 17. The Fashion Show is Friday night, Oct. 15 at 7:30 pm hosting by yours truly. The photo's below are from previous shows to give you a taste of what goes on at the show.

Anniversary Celebration The Cotton Patch

Saturday night, August 14, The Cotton Patch celebrated it's 32nd anniversary with an outdoor party complete with cake (actually yummy cupcakes), ice cream and door prizes! The photo shows Carolie Hensley, Founder & Owner of The Cotton Patch and Alex Anderson holding one of Alex's early quilts.

Quilters, teachers, fabric lovers and staff shared stories of how Carolie and The Cotton Patch had touched them personally. There were funny story's of ugly first quilts, late night panic phone calls for help and shared memories of quilting travel adventures (Nancy, Shari and Carolie, my lips are sealed!).

Relay for Life

Yesterday my husband and I participated in our first Relay for Life walk. He is a Cancer survivor and we were dressed in purple t-shirts and had purple balloons with the number of years each for each survivor on their balloon. We actually made it around the track 2 1/2 times!

The Ladies of the Lake

The Ladies of the Lake are a fun group of women located in Northern (and I mean northern) California. From the hills, you can see all the way across Clearlake.

Georgia, Lurette and Karen were working very hard are their one-of-a-kind vest.

fabric we played with on Sunday. (Batiks, Lurel Birch, Valori Wells and more)

Morgan Hill and Me

Just over the hill from the Pinnacle quilt guild, you will find the Piece by Piece quilters of Morgan Hill. I had the opportunity to spend a few more days in the valley with this active group.

Pinnacle Quilters of San Benito County

Pinnacle Quilters Guild Meeting

If you are ever driving through the central coast towns, make sure you take a side tour of San Juan Batista. The Pinnacle quilters have an active guild that meets in the area. The town also has some very tasty restaurants.

As you can see, there were Diva's on parade everywhere!

Martinez, Main Street Quilts and Me

Main Street Quilts is a destination shop. Susie has a wonderful selection of fabric in two large rooms. On Saturday, June 28th. we had a fun class designing our one-of-a-kind jackets. The formal title is Designer Collection Jacket, and we had fabric collections from multiple designers.

Barbara had to watch her back with her Yummy Asian Fabric. I think she was designing two jackets at the same time, since I seem to remember reviewing blue fabric at the beginning of class.

The ladies meeting in Martinez for a Designer Collection Jacket class on Saturday had a ball! Jean and Cheri shared a love of purple and blue fabric. They also had large tote bags with sparkle embellishment.....hubba, hubba!

Grace putting her lovely flowers away. I didn't catch them in the photo, but in Grace's stash, she has a group of large (4 inch plus) flowers that will find their way into her design.

Noralee (a.k.a. Teacher's Pet) was fearless in her design process. I can't wait to see the finished jacket.

Placerville, Historic and Fun

Placerville is an interesting and historic town north of Sacramento, California. It is the home of the Gold Bug Quilt Guild. Sally and Anethe are the program chairs and also long time travel buddies.
Anethe was working on a lovely sea side view.

Notice the concentration on the students faces. We were having a blast working with the built in stitches on the sewing machines. We had a lovely, large classroom with lots of light, plenty of power and extra table space.

This circle jacket was made by Chris Parker, and awesome teacher from Salado, Texas.
Chris teaches the sweatshirt jacket class as well as other garments: Raggy Jacket; Art Vest; Bias Jacket.

During class I see dozens of wonderful designs while the students are working, but it is rare for me to see the completed project. I received a few photo's of completed jackets from some of my friends that I would like to share with you:

Fun With Folsom!

Mid month I had a fabulous time with the Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild. During the trunk show, I had volunteer models floated through the audience keeping the attendees engaged while quilts were being shown on stage. Bottom line....we had a blast. The next morning the jacket class explored the world of fabric collage. Check out their pictures:

Santa Barbara Adventure!

I just returned from visiting with the Coastal Quilter's Guild of Santa Barbara and Goleta. This was an incredible trip. The weather was in the high 80's to low 90's all three days which seems a little unfair since snow is still falling on the East Coast.

We had a glorious time this weekend with Amber and Auzsa. Auzsa is my 17 months old granddaughter and she gets very excited by new adventures. We had her first Easter egg hunt in the backyard and she was all giggles.

I've included a few photos of her with her first "found" egg and playing on her giant pillow. Some of you may recognize the pillow. It's a pattern by Amy Butler and loads of fun for a toddler. Now I need to recover from a very busy weekend.

Pacific Piecemakers and CA 1

The winding road to Gualala

Last Friday, I had a very interesting road trip. We drove up highway CA 1 along the Pacific coast to Gualala. The scenery was breathtaking and so was the ride. If you have not been on this road, imagine a two lane road that snakes in and out, up and over for miles! When we looked at the gps screen, it looked like someone had thrown spaghetti on the screen to represent the road!

At the end of this picture perfect drive, we arrived at the Gualala Arts Center. This rustic building is located in the woods on the outskirts of town and is beautiful. Our meeting was held in a large auditorium with lots of space for display. I had high energy volunteer models that strutted their stuff for their fellow guild members.

After my presentation, I was taken to see a gorgeous quilt show for the Pacific Piecemakers guild in one of the Art Centers exhibit halls. Each quilt was inspired by a book. The quilts were displayed as an art installation in a museum setting which made viewing very easy for visitors.

Our trip down the mountain was not as traumatic since we knew what to expect on the return trip. If you are ever in Gualala, Sea Ranch or Mendocino areas, stop by the Gualala Arts Center for a real treat.

Guild of Quilters of Contra Costa County

Not just 1...2 finished jackets!

The GQCCC had their annual quilt show the weekend of March 15-16. I was invited to present a lecture/trunk show on Monday evening, March 17.

All of you quilters know how much work goes into a quilt show, so imagine my surprise when the meeting was nearly full! These energetic quilters had a lively meeting as the quilt show committee summarized the quilt show accomplishments. In addition, they had wonderful projects to share during Show and Tell.

I had a hardy group of volunteer Diva models and plenty of help with sharing quilts.

The enclosed photo's are completed jackets from one of my classes. This student enjoy making her jacket so much, she made another one!

National Quilting Day - CSS Friendship Luncheon

On National Quilting Day, the Carquinez Strait Stitchers hosted the annual friendship lunch. We hand a great time eating, sharing and laughing with the Vallejo, Napa and Fairfield quilt guild members. There were door prizes, games and a "knock your socks off" show and tell. As you can see from these few photos, a great time was had by all. In addition to all of this merriment, two quilts to extremely happy quilters won Opportunity Quilts!

Playing Catch-up! Diva Art Vest Class

Happy Easter to one and all. I am going to use the next few posts to catch up on all of the events that I didn't get a chance to post over the last month. It's been a fun and busy time of the year for me.

On March 12, I had a fun Diva Art Vest class at Quiltmaker in Napa. The students worked very hard creating their one-of-a-kind vest as you can see from the pictures that are posted.

I've attached a few pictures of these wonderful ladies.

Mid-Atlantic Fashion Show

Last week was the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton, Virginia. In addition to classes I coordinated the fashion show (Fashion, Fun and Flair). We had a wonderful time. Garments were submitted by Christine Parker of Salado, Texas, Cherrywood Fabrics and of course, me.

I will be adding pictures as I post more information about the show. The students were wonderful, the weather chilly and vendors were numerous!

Modesto and Me

Tuesday night I had a wonderful time with the Country Crossroads Quilters of Modesto. These ladies were full of energy and had a great sense of humor. I arrived a few minutes late (very tongue in cheek!) due to unforeseen traffic issues. No stress on the part of these quilters. They adjusted their meeting agenda, finished show and tell and volunteers met me at the door. We completed setting up in record time!

I had several stellar models for my garments, and they strutted their stuff. I enjoyed seeing familiar faces and meeting new Diva friends.

New Website!

This is my first post to my new blog and I am very excited. My website is under construction at the moment and the only active links are my blog and book order form. I will be presenting a program tomorrow night for the Country Crossroads Quilters of Modesto.

I am going to upload a photo just to make sure I know how to incorporate some cool stuff on my blog....wish me luck!
